Parish History

Grouped with the Parish of Castletown, Aughrim, Avoca and Johnstown.

Originally part of Glendalough Diocese.  Glendalough and Dublin amalgamated in 1216.  1279: First recorded Arklow parish church dedicated to St. Mary.  Church built at Old Chapel ground in 1798.  Churches erected in 1803 in Arklow and Johnstown.  1861 Arklow church dedicated by Cardinal Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin.
