Bishop Eamonn Walsh retires as
auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Diocese

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the Office of Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin presented, on reaching the age of 75, by Bishop Eamonn Walsh. The announcement was made in Rome this morning, 30 September.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said this morning that he was deeply grateful to Bishop Walsh for his service to the Archdiocese of Dublin. He said Bishop Eamonn has been a bishop for over 29 years. During those years he was especially committed to the area of priestly formation and the care of priests, as Dean of Holy Cross College, as Vicar for Priests, and as Chairman of the Clerical Fund Society.
He was Area Bishop for the Deaneries of Blessington, South Dublin and Tallaght. He was a Member of the Diocesan Council for Priests for many years.
He had been prison Chaplain both in Mountjoy and Arbour Hill prisons for a number of years and continued his concern and advocacy for prisoners as liaison bishop with the prison authorities. At episcopal conference level, he also led the Irish Bishops Drugs Initiative. At a difficult time, he undertook the task of being Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Ferns.
Archbishop Martin thanked Bishop Walsh for his dedicated service within the diocese and wish him every blessing for the years to come. ENDS
