Friday the 26th June Ordinations and Commissioning of Lay Pastoral Workers in Dublin Diocese
This Saturday (June 27th) three men will be ordained priests – two for the Archdiocese of Dublin and one for the Capuchin Province of Korea, at a ceremony in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral in Dublin. And for the first time in Dublin, a unique part of the ceremony will see 13 parish pastoral workers commissioned into their new roles in parishes. The ceremonies begin at 11am.
The new priests and parish pastoral workers take up their roles as the Diocese begins its Year of Evangelisation this weekend.
The parish pastoral workers –women and men– come from a variety of backgrounds, are theology graduates and have just completed a year long formation course in Mater Dei Institute. The group includes a number of former teachers, a barman, a homemaker, a technician and students. Their central role will be to support priests and communities in educating people in their faith in, supporting and developing parish initiatives around prayer and the sacraments.
The men to be ordained are Aloysius Zuribo is from Orlu in the state of Imo in Nigeria, Colin Rothery from Kilmacud in Dublin and Stephen Kim (OFM Capuchin) from Korea, who is currently in the Capuchin Friary, Raheny.
Aloysius Zuribo is from the state of Imo in Nigeria. One of a family of 7 he studied philosophy and worked as a teacher of religion in Imo and in Lagos. He also worked as a secretary to the Nigerian Churches’ Justice and Peace Commission in Lagos and trained in theatre work in Lagos Stage University. In 2003 he completed a scholarship MA in Chant and Ritual in the University of Limerick. During that time he lived with the Augustinians in Limerick and was again considering a Vocation. He then took part in the Galilee programme for the Archdiocese of Dublin, a year long preparation programme for men considering priesthood. He has lived and worked in the parishes in Lucan, Clonskeagh, and Tallaght.
Colin Rothery is a graduate of UCD and DCU. When he graduated he lived and worked as a teacher in Barcelona and Madrid. On his return to Dublin he worked with the Focus Theatre Group and also did outreach work with Vincent de Paul and prison visitation work. He spent three years of his studies for the priesthood in Rome. For the past year he has been working in one of the Dioceses busiest parishes, Balbriggan.
The aim of the Year of Evangelisation is to support, animate and develop Evangelisation initiatives throughout parishes in the diocese. This includes supporting parish Sacramental programmes and initiatives such as the Do this in Memory Holy Communion Programme and You Will be My Witnesses Confirmation programme and joint initiatives with the Church of Ireland.
