POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION ON THE EUCHARIST

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who was one of the representatives of the Irish Episcopal Conference at the Synod, has welcomed the new document of Pope Benedict XVI Sacramentum Caritatis which gathers the fruits of the reflection of the Synod OF Bishops held in Rome in 2005.

Archbishop Martin called the document “a profound summary of theological and spiritual reflection on the Eucharist as the source and the summit of the Church’s life and mission”.

“The document is a reminder of what the Church is.  The Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life.  All other aspects of the Church’s life, mission and community spring from the Eucharist.  The new document indicates the link between the Eucharist and each of the sacraments and can be the food for reflection by all believers”.

Archbishop Martin said that he hoped that this document would be a major instrument in the pastoral reflection and renewal of the Church in Dublin in the coming years.  The Pope notes that “every great reform has in some way been linked to the rediscovery of belief in the Lord’s Eucharistic presence among his people”.

Archbishop Martin announced that the Archdiocese of Dublin would be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress later in the year with a major Eucharistic Procession in the grounds of Holy Cross College Clonliffe on the feast of Corpus Christ, 7th June next.
