Dublin Diocese marks “Day for Life”
In a message to priests of the Diocese to mark Day for Life 2007, the Archbishop of Dublin Dr. Diarmuid Martin, said only a coherent Pro Life stance supports a healthy society.
Being Pro-Life he said was not just being anti abortion. Pro Life activity, said Dr. Martin, can take many different forms, “from direct action in support of those who are poor or sick, to advocacy for those whose rights are threatened; from development work in poorer parts of our world, to highlighting the horrors of war, to the promotion of respect for the environment. The Church has long recognized, however, that there are times when the value and dignity of human life is especially likely to be obscured or neglected. In today’s world, that applies in a special way to the defence of the value and worth of human life in the womb.”
Day for Life is celebrated every year by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Scotland England and Wales. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning of life at every stage and in every condition.
In his letter to priests, Archbishop Martin paid particular tribute to the CURA organisation which he said had been “in the frontline of the Churches concern for women experiencing crisis pregnancy for over three decades. “
He said its volunteers had an extraordinary record for the way they provided countless women with compassion and support in times of difficulty. He said the Church and Irish society owed them a debt of gratitude. “Cura,” he said” witnessed in a powerful way to the care of Jesus Christ for all those who are anxious and troubled.”
